Vegetative Propagation

How do farmers and botanists use asexual reproduction to grow crops and house plants?

Task

1. Choose a type of crop or house plant that reproduces asexually and that you can easily obtain.

2. Research how to reproduce this plant through asexual reproduction.

3. Gather the materials you will need to reproduce this plant.

Note: There are some supplies within the classroom, but you may need to find your own supplies.

4. Perform the procedure to make your plant reproduce asexually.  You may want to record the process with photos.

It may take some time for your plants to grow. Prepare the rest of your project in the meantime (you will not be behind if you can show evidence of what you are working on).

5. Keep a Photo Journal of your growing plants to record their progress.

6. Create a poster, slide show, or video that includes:

- The plant you chose

- The type of asexual reproduction your plant uses.

- A step by step process of how you reproduced your plant.

- A discussion about why farmers or botanists would want to use asexual reproduction to reproduce their plants.

- A discussion about the danger of farmers or botanists using asexual reproduction to reproduce their plants.

- The photo journal you recorded of your growing plants.

7.  Optional Level 4: Develop a strategy to mass produce your plant and sell your plants to benefit an organization or charity of your choice or as a fundraiser for school.  When selling the plants, include a card with care instructions and information about the reproduction of the plant for buyers.
