Colonizing Mars

How should we reproduce crops to grow food on other planets?

 

Colonizing planets is a dream of the future.  How could asexual reproduction be used to help feed people on different planets?  Would sexually reproducing plants be a better option than asexually reproducing crops?  What type of crops could we grow, what would we need to keep them alive?  Develop a plan that could help future generations!

Task:

1. Choose a planet that humans might want to colonize (this is typically Mars, but you could choose another planet).  Research the conditions of this planet (type of soil, water, sunlight, temperature, etc.) that would be important for growing plants.

2. Make a Case for whether we should use plants that reproduce sexually or asexually on the planet.  Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each as you construct your argument.

3. Research food crops that we might want to grow on the colonized planet and the types of reproduction they use (remember to consider whether you think we should use sexually or asexually reproducing plants). Determine which of these plants would grow best on the planet.  Remember, the goal is to support human life, so we will need a variety of food to eat.  Try to have at least 6 crops that could be grown.

 

4. Level 4: Describe what each plant would need to grow and reproduce in the garden on the planet.  What would be needed (equipment and/or conditions) to make this a reality?

5. Create a proposal in a format of your choice (slideshow, essay, poster, etc.) that includes the following:

- The planet you chose to colonize and the conditions of the planet.

​

- Whether we should use asexual or sexually reproducing plants on the colonized planet.

​

- The types of plants you would grow on the planet and the method of reproduction they use.

​

- What the plants would need to grow successfully in the garden (optional Level 4).
